ACTIVITY DIRECTOR

 JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Employment Classification: Hourly, Non-exempt

 

Reports To: Administrator

 

Summary of Position:

Responsible for designing and implementing resident recreational/activities programs that meet the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of the residents.

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, prefer previous experience and/or training

  in implementing activity programs for seniors

  • Ability to communicate well
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Team player
  • Ability to relate positively, effectively and appropriately with residents, family

  members, and staff.

  • Ability to organize, plan and at times work autonomously
  • Possess current Hawaii driver’s license in good standing, prefer commercial driver’s license
  • Ability to plan and implement appropriate out of facility activities. Transport residents via facility van or bus to activities including medical appointments.
  • Ability to creatively develop professional monthly activity calendar to be posted in the facility
  • Ability to teach, direct, motivate and inspire residents into meaningful activities
  • Possess such attributes as flexibility, patience, and creativity
  • A broad understanding of working with senior citizens
  • A genuine interest in meeting the needs of the residents served
  • Ability to assist residents intermittently with care needs
  • Meet all requirements as specified in the Employee Handbook and Operating Policies and Procedures Manuals
  • Meet all requirements established by regulation that pertain to employees who work in an Assisted Living setting, Hawaii Administrative Rules, Department of Health, Title 11, Chapter 90.
  • Ability to attend in-services and on-going training programs
  • Physical requirements of position: frequent standing and walking, bending/stooping/pushing/pulling and lifting; in addition must be free of communicable disease and meet community policies and procedures regarding necessary physical health

 

Duties:

  • Develop and implement meaningful programs for residents that will include group activities and one-to-one programs.
  • Be responsible and accountable for ensuring that there are meaningful activities throughout the day and week that residents can participate in.
  • Plan and implement appropriate out of facility activities. Transport residents via facility van or bus for planned activities including shopping and medical appointments.
  • Arrange entertainment and plan facility parties, picnics and field trips for residents.
  • Develop and post professional, current monthly calendar in the facility of activities and events available for resident participation.
  • Know resident rights and provide activity programs in a manner that promotes resident rights and is respectful of individual resident choices.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent resident information in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth and personal interest.
  • Continually monitor effectiveness of current programs offered and alter programs as necessary to maximize resident participation.
  • Facilitate Resident Council within regulatory guidelines. Encourage resident participation in the planning of facility activities and functions.
  • Assist in developing an active volunteer program, orient and direct volunteers as necessary to carry out activity program goals.
  • Follow established community policies regarding purchasing practices, ensure that activity department stays within budgeted guidelines.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate inventory of activity department supplies.
  • Work in cooperative manner with other departments particularly Director of Nursing Services and care staff in implementing meaningful activities for residents. Participate in implementation of individual resident service plans with regard to activity development to meet individual resident needs.
  • Maintain effective networking relationships with outside community individuals and resources to enhance activities program.
  • Develop community programs that meet spiritual needs of residents.
  • Seasonally decorate facility as appropriate and in coordination with other departments.
  • Attend in-services, training programs and meetings as scheduled.
  • Maintain driver’s license in good standing.
  • Provide intermittent care to residents (such as toileting) in conjunction with the performance of activities as appropriate.
  • Complete reports as necessary within the scope of position.
  • Be familiar with community policies and procedures as specified in Operating Policies and Procedures Manual. Work within the parameters of policies and procedures that are specified and keep all requirements updated.
  • Be familiar with disaster and fire plans as specified in policies and procedures. Assist with resident evacuation should it become necessary.
  • Discuss Activity Department concerns/recommendations with Administrator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Administrator.
